Essential Oils Offer Natural Relief
With so many seniors juggling multiple medications, the last thing many want to do is add another pill to their daily routine. And according to Laura Jaramillo, individual and family counselor and wellness advocate and distributor of doTERRA essential oils, they may not have to.
The use of essential oils to treat symptoms such as irregular sleep, muscle aches and indigestion dates back to the days of Cleopatra, Jaramillo said, and are just as useful today as they were in ancient times. Jaramillo has found doTERRA oils to be so effective, she relies on them exclusively for relief of aches and pains.
Peppermint, frankincense and Deep Blue, doTERRA’s exclusive blend of wintergreen, camphor, peppermint, ylang ylang, helichrysum, blue tansy, blue chamomile and osmanthus, are all effective ways to relax muscles and ease pain.
While she stands behind the effectiveness of these all-natural products, Jaramillo encourages anyone with a physical or emotional problem to first see a doctor. While her oils can relieve troublesome symptoms, it’s best to rule out any underlying causes.
Lavender oil, derived directly from the fragrant herb, is naturally calming and can also ease muscle tension and anxiety. While lavender certainly isn’t a cure for dementia, it can be effective in calming the agitation that often is part of the condition.
“Peppermint is one of my favorites,” Jaramillo said. “It’s really good to wake you up in the morning.”
Peppermint oil also can be used to calm an upset stomach or relieve head tension and aches.
Ginger oil also can be used to calm an upset stomach, and cypress oil has been shown to help with urinary troubles, Jaramillo said.
Essential oils can be used in three ways:
Aromatically – use a diffuser to fill a room with your aroma of choice.
Topically – try a hand massage or dab oil onto pulse points.
Internally – add a few drops to water and use it as a supplement.
Again, it’s best to check with a physician before using any holistic remedy.
Seniors aren’t the only people who can benefit from naturally derived essential oils. Caregivers also can turn to them for relief from the stress, tension, lack of sleep, and lack of energy, that all too often are part of the job.
Jaramillo’s job is to help each client find the natural oils that will help their particular needs. She offers a free one-on-one consultation with anyone interested in adding essential oils to their wellness routine.
