Home Helpers Home Care of Hinsdale, and Casey’s Market, join forces to deliver comfort food to older adults
HINSDALE, March 4, 2011 — A collaboration announced today between Home Helpers Home Care, a home services agency, and Casey’s Market, a purveyor of fine meats, has resulted in the debut of Kate’s Comfort Food. The service provides homemade meals-for-one, delivered to the homes of seniors in the western suburbs.
In response to a growing number of individuals in need, Kate’s Comfort Food breaks down the barriers to eating well.“ There are so many issues that keep seniors from eating well,” said Mary Doepke, RN, Co-Owner of the Hinsdale Home Helpers. “Problems like a diminished appetite, poor dental health, reactions to medicines or a lack of transportation can create roadblocks to proper nutrition. And good nutrition is critical to maintaining our health as we age.” A 2009 study from the Library of the National Medical Society confirms that under nutrition is a common condition in the elderly.
While Meals on Wheels provides nutritional meals for the homebound, Kate’s Comfort Food also focuses on making those meals enticing. “This is comfort food that these customers know and love,” said Kate Jones, the name behind Kate’s Comfort Food, and a key member of the Casey’s team. “It’s a menu that will provide them with motivation to eat.” An article about nutrition and the elderly from sparkpeople.com states that “poor nutrition and malnutrition occur in 15 to 50 percent of the elderly population.” Ensuring that meals are appetizing and appealing eliminates a barrier to seniors eating enough calories.
Kate’s Comfort Food features favorites like Pot Roast, Salisbury Steak and Corned Beef, among the menu’s 20 meals and dozen soups. Most dishes contain a main course, veggie and side, and are delivered in containers for microwave, oven or freezer. Average meal price is about $7, plus a flat $5 delivery fee. There are no minimum orders and no tipping. Delivery is on Tuesdays and Fridays. Orders are currently being taken by phone: 630-323-7231 and fax: 630-323-7241. Menus can be downloaded at MaryAndMikeCare.com.
Casey’s Market has been serving the western suburbs of Chicago since 1969, offering the finest selections of fresh meat, poultry, seafood, prepared food and an ever-expanding selection of unique products. Highest quality meats, excellent customer service and a knowledgeable staff are the hallmarks of this suburban institution that has been family owned and operated for more than 30 years.
